About the Open Call

Yaddo has been a haven for artists for a century, committed to fostering an inclusive environment for individual artists, giving them the time, space, and silence to create their best work. We offer residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Artists apply individually, and selection is based on peer review. Residencies last from two weeks to two months and include room, board, and a studio. Yaddo encourages applications from artists working at a professional level or emerging artists showing great promise, judging applications solely on the quality of work without imposing publication, exhibition, or performance requirements. Yaddo strongly encourages applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in arts and culture to apply, upholding an equal opportunity policy. The facility is open year-round, except for a winter hiatus. During the larger season (May-September), 25-30 artists are in residence, while the smaller season (October-April) hosts about 18. International artists are welcome, but Yaddo does not provide interpreters or U.S. visa assistance. Each artist receives a private bedroom and workspace. Weekly room cleanings, linens, fresh towels, and laundry facilities are provided. Communal dinners are served, with breakfast and lunch packed for artists; vegetarian alternatives are available. Specialized equipment is provided in photo, printmaking, and welding studios, and composers' studios have pianos. Wireless Internet and some computers are available centrally. Yaddo cannot accommodate family members, friends, or pets (except service animals). Applicants with special medical needs or mobility concerns should contact the Program Director before applying.

What is Offered

Residencies include a private bedroom, studio space, and full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Modest access grants are available to offset travel costs for invited artists. The opportunity provides a supportive environment with dedicated time and space to focus on creative work without external requirements.

Requirements

Applicants must be professional creative artists. Artists currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate programs or completing work for an academic degree are not eligible. Artists may apply once every other calendar year. The residency supports individual artists engaged in creating new, original work; auxiliary artists (e.g., technicians, dancers for others' projects) are ineligible. All applications must be complete, including recent work samples, and work samples must be anonymous. Those requiring service animals or having special medical needs must indicate this during application or contact the Program Director.

How to Apply

All applications must be submitted electronically through the SlideRoom portal at yaddo.slideroom.com. The application portal opens in June for the August 1 deadline and mid-November for the January 6 deadline. Complete instructions by discipline, including specific process and work sample requirements, are available in the SlideRoom portal and on the Yaddo website. Work samples (visual images, video clips, manuscript pages, or audio files) should reflect the proposed project and represent recent, finished work. For anonymous review, applicants must omit their name from all work sample uploads in both the file title and embedded content.
