About the Open Call

TOTALLY OPEN is a call without a specific theme, an open search for what will result from a process of inquiry and curiosity through a reversal of process. Manifest is known for its thoughtful thematic approaches to exhibitions, typically issuing calls with a subject in mind, resulting in shows that survey contemporary art about a certain idea. For the second year, Manifest reverses this process: it will host an open call, then discover the theme (or multiple themes) through the curatorial process, not before. The gallery's focus remains on finding and showcasing exceptional quality visual art, giving artists the chance to steer the epiphanies that a TOTALLY OPEN call will yield. Utilizing a reduced entry fee, this call is completely open to any work, any media, and any idea, under the umbrella of 'visual art'.

What is Offered

Each participating exhibitor will receive a $50 cash honorarium. Manifest also offers $9,000 in Grand Jury Awards, with $1,000 awarded to one work during each of the nine exhibition periods for the 22nd season. For works offered for sale, the artist receives 70% of the sale price. Exhibiting artists have the option to purchase one copy of the season's MEA (Manifest Exhibition Annual) publication at half price, or receive a free copy by becoming a supporting donor.

Requirements

The 'TOTALLY OPEN' call is open to everyone internationally, without any specific limitations. All traditional and non-traditional genres and media are accepted, including 2D and 3D works. There are no size restrictions on submissions other than what can fit in the gallery spaces, on walls, and through doors; artists with potentially oversized work are encouraged to inquire. There are also no timeframe requirements for when submitted works must have been made, as Manifest believes great art has no expiration date. Applicants must submit digital images/files according to specified naming conventions and resolution requirements. Video-based or interactive submissions require a link to a viewable online copy and a representative JPEG image. Submission of the entry form constitutes agreement to make the work available and ship/deliver it to the gallery if selected.

How to Apply

After reviewing the full prospectus, applicants must complete the required ENTRY FORM online at https://www.manifestgallery.org/totally-open/entry/index.html. Images must be uploaded using the Dropbox link provided after entry form submission, which will also be included in the emailed copy of the form. The entry fee can be paid by U.S. check or money order made payable to MANIFEST, or by credit card via PayPal using the link provided on the page that follows online entry form submission. Any fee payment must reference the applicant's name, or Manifest must be notified if another party is paying the fee.
