Tombolo
This residency centres on the intersection of art, design, and public reach. Alongside producing a cohesive exhibition, the artist collaborates with Tombolo to adapt their work into wearable pieces, with the brand leading production, marketing, and distribution. The process encourages artists to think beyond traditional gallery contexts and consider how their visual language can function as both artwork and product, reaching audiences through multiple platforms. The selected artist is supported with a $3,500 stipend to cover materials and related expenses, as well as a fully funded solo exhibition in Manhattan with 0% commission on sales, allowing the artist to keep all proceeds. They receive mentorship and direct collaboration with Tombolo’s founders and team, while the brand handles garment production, photoshoots, marketing, and PR. The artist also benefits from significant exposure through the exhibition, social media, and press, in addition to earning royalties on each shirt sold.
Residency and exhibition opportunity.
The artist is expected to produce a body of work for the final exhibition and develop two garment designs in collaboration with the Tombolo team—one based on an existing work early in the residency, and another tied to new work shown in the exhibition. They must participate in the exhibition process, including installation, event planning, and being present in New York for approximately a week around the show. Artists are responsible for transporting their work to NYC if working remotely and for arranging their own accommodation, as housing is not provided. They may also contribute to a small in-store display within Tombolo’s retail space.
Submit the online form via Jotform, including artist information, answers to specific questions about your practice, and 3-4 images of your work.
