About the Open Call

The Heckscher Museum of Art invites artists from Nassau and Suffolk Counties to submit up to three original works for the Long Island Biennial 2026. This year's exhibition is a themed competition celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the centennial of George Grosz’s 'Eclipse of the Sun'. Artists are encouraged to submit work that resonates with the promises, ideals, and contradictions of the Declaration's legacy or is inspired by Grosz’s masterwork. Eligible media include paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, prints, and mixed media created in or after 2024.

What is Offered

Selected artists will have their work exhibited at The Heckscher Museum of Art from May 16 to September 13, 2026, inclusion on the museum website, and fine arts insurance coverage while the work is in the museum's possession.

Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years or older and residents of Nassau or Suffolk County, NY. They must demonstrate specialized training in art through education, exhibition experience, or critical notice. Submissions must have been created during or after 2024. 2D works cannot exceed 62 inches in the longest dimension; 3D works must be within 60x30x30 inches and under 75 lbs.

Applications must be submitted via the ShowSubmit platform, including a list of fine arts education and exhibitions, an artist statement (max 120 words), digital images of the artwork, and the applicable entry fee.
