The Elephant Trust
The Elephant Trust was created in 1975 by Roland Penrose and Lee Miller with a view to develop and improve the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the fine arts in the United Kingdom. Its policy is guided by the injunction 'To bear in mind at all times an original, inquisitive, open-minded, generous and unshockable approach to art in all its forms with a bias towards the visual arts.' The Trust was set up to make it possible for artists and those presenting their work to undertake and complete projects when frustrated by lack of funds, and is committed to helping artists and art institutions/galleries that depart from the routine and signal new, distinct and imaginative sets of possibilities. The Elephant Trust also administers three other trusts: The George Melhuish Bequest, The Shelagh Wakely Bequest, and The Joanna Drew Travel Bursary.
