Smith College Special Collections
The program includes various fellowship opportunities for in-person research. Grants for Smith students (Rosenthal Fellowship) support internships and capstone projects. Visiting researcher fellowships include long-term (2+ weeks) and short-term (up to 2 weeks) awards. Specific awards include the Margaret Storrs Grierson Fellowship, Ruth Mortimer Fellowship, and Arts and Media Travel Research Fellowships for projects resulting in publicly accessible work like fiction, multimedia, visual, or performing arts.
Awards range from $1,000 for short-term and special opportunity fellowships to $2,500 for long-term fellowships intended to offset travel and research expenses.
Applicants must be 18 years or older. Visiting researchers must live more than 60 miles from Northampton, MA. Research must be conducted in person at the Special Collections repositories. Long-term fellowship recipients are expected to present an informal work-in-progress presentation.
Applications open October 1, 2025. Applicants must submit an online application form via Airtable including a research project description (1,250 words or less) and a resume/CV/portfolio (not to exceed 5 pages).
