Rivers of Democracy 2026

About the Open Call

Rivers of Democracy invites artists, activists, researchers, and facilitators to participate in three unique 2026 residency journeys: a stationary residency in Vienna, a boat residency through northern France, and a cycling expedition from Bratislava to Budapest. The project explores the role of rivers as ecological and political entities, fostering interdisciplinary exchange, collective decision-making, and participatory public interventions during major European festivals. Participants will co-design activities, engage with local communities, and contribute to a shared process of exploration regarding ecology, cosmologies, and democratic transformation.

What is Offered

Coverage of all core costs including travel within Europe, accommodation, and food, plus opportunities to present work at major festivals.

Requirements

Applicants should be interested in rethinking democracy and nature; comfortable with shared living and group decision-making; and able to contribute to public events or documentation. Cycling capability is specifically required for the Danube route.
