Penland School of Craft
Established in the 1960s, the Penland Resident Artist Program is designed for professional craft artists at a pivotal moment in their careers. It offers two tracks: a 1-year project residency for focused research and technical exploration, and a 3-year residency for artists transitioning career paths or establishing a studio practice. Resident artists are integrated into the Penland community, participating in open studios, mentoring core fellows, and engaging with workshop participants. Studios are available for a wide range of craft media including books, clay, drawing, painting, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood.
Free housing, studio space, and utilities; one tuition-free workshop enrollment per residency; representation by the Penland Gallery; opportunities for studio sales and professional community engagement.
Self-motivated, professional artists working in traditional or nontraditional craft media; submission of a portfolio demonstrating innovation and skill; a clear residency proposal; actively engaged in professional artistic practice.
Applications are accepted through SlideRoom between April 15 and June 15, 2026. Applicants must submit a portfolio, CV, and a project proposal or career objectives.
