About the Open Call

Recess partners with artists, youth, and writers to create transformative cultural experiences. The Session program activates creative production through a residency-style occupation of gallery space. Artists are encouraged to propose projects that respond to needs for systems change and include public engagement. The program also offers a specialized Session X Assembly format for collaboration with systems-impacted youth. Selected artists receive support for installation and professional documentation.

What is Offered

Artist honoraria of $3,500 (individuals) or $5,000 (collectives), project expenses up to $10,000, 4 days of installation assistance, and professional photo/video documentation of the project.

Requirements

Proposals must outline questions and methodologies for exploration, a response to systems change, and a plan for how the installation will evolve over 6-8 weeks. Applicants must provide work samples created within the past two years. Applications must be received by 11:59pm EST on the deadline date.

How to Apply

Submit a proposal via the Recess Submittable portal. The application requires answering six project-related questions (max 200 words each), an itemized budget using the provided template, 10-12 work samples (images, video, or audio), a numbered image/video list, and a CV up to 5 pages.
