Penington Friends House - Bayard Rustin Residency

Penington Friends House

About the Open Call

Building on the social activist history of Penington’s founders, the Bayard Rustin Residency is envisioned as an ongoing ladder to empowerment for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) working to end Systemic Racism. The resident will reside at the Penington Friends House in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Areas of focus can include activism in the arts, policy change, human rights, and community organizing. Residents are expected to be full-time members of the intentional community, participating in shared meals and light household chores (approx. 1.5 hours/week).

What is Offered

The residency covers the cost of rent, boarding (food) provided 5 nights a week, internet, cable, and heat/AC for up to one year. Limited access to a studio space starting at 3:30 PM on weekdays may be available. Note: A stipend is not currently provided.

Requirements

Applicants must be BIPOC individuals working on projects that address racism and/or intersectional issues. Residents must demonstrate a need to be in New York City and be willing to participate in an intentional living community. The bedroom is located on the 4th floor of a historic brownstone without elevator access, and bathrooms are shared.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the online Google Form link: https://forms.gle/anKbz98icoGLskuz8. Applicants are encouraged to review the Penington Friends House website and social media to understand the nature of the intentional community before applying.
