University of Salford Art Collection
The University of Salford Art Collection, in collaboration with Network Rail, is seeking proposals for a bold, permanent legacy artwork to be installed on the new third platform at Salford Crescent Railway Station. The artwork should commemorate the former Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal while acting as an iconic gateway marker for the University and The Crescent. The brief is open to various media including sculpture, murals, installations, sound, and digital work. The selected artist will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and full installation within a three-day window.
A total commission budget of £20,000 (including VAT) to cover artist fees, design, fabrication, installation, engagement, and documentation.
Artists or collectives must be registered to work in the UK, hold Public Liability Insurance, and be able to comply with railway safety and access requirements. The final artwork must be delivered and installed by August 2026.
Submit a short proposal (max 4 pages) including a Statement of Interest & Approach, Concept Visuals, Sustainability & Social Value outline, Detailed Fee Proposal/Cost Breakdown, and a High-Level Timescale. Also include a CV with up to 4 examples of previous work. Applications should be sent in standard file formats to artcollection@salford.ac.uk with the subject 'Salford Crescent Station Artwork'.
