About the Open Call

Join José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s 37th annual production of The Nutcracker this holiday season! JMBT welcomes dancers of all backgrounds to audition for its professional company and character roles for the upcoming Nutcracker season. Advanced/Professional dancers with significant performance experience (en pointe for women) are encouraged to attend. Adult dancers interested in participating should contact us to discuss potential casting/involvement in certain roles. Auditions will be held both in-person at JMBT studios located in Harvard Square and via video submission. Preference will be given to local dancers from the Greater Boston area. Dancers must be legally authorized to work in the US. We are not able to sponsor international dancers at this time. Performance dates are December 6-21, 2025, at Strand Theatre, Dorchester, MA. Rehearsals will run from November 10, 2025, through December 21, 2025 (6-week contract), Monday–Friday, 9:00AM–4:00PM, with some weekends as necessary, at JMBT Studios, 400 Harvard Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. Live audition dates include Thursday, July 17; Tuesday, July 22; Friday, August 1; Friday, September 26; and Monday, September 29, all at 10:30am at JMBT Studios. Video audition submissions should be 2 or 3 performance excerpts or ballet class exercises, totaling 5-10 minutes, high quality, with clear technique. Female dancers must showcase dancing on pointe. Male dancers in form-fitting dance attire.

What is Offered

Dancers will be offered a 6-week contract. Remuneration is commensurate with experience and role and will be paid bi-weekly. Complimentary adult open class credits will be offered to all contracted dancers from October 1 onwards.

Requirements

Advanced/Professional dancers with significant performance experience (en pointe for women) are encouraged to attend. Dancers must be legally authorized to work in the US. Specific audition attire: form-fitting attire; female dancers to have a separate pointe segment; male dancers in form-fitting dance attire in ballet shoes. Highly recommended to arrive in shape for an intensive rehearsal period.

How to Apply

All dancers, whether auditioning in-person or submitting a video audition, must fill out the audition form on the website. For live auditions, dancers should be prepared to attend an open class with additional exercises/repertoire (on pointe) as needed (2 hours) at JMBT Studios. For video auditions, submit 2 or 3 high-quality video performance excerpts or ballet class exercises (5-10 minutes total) showcasing dance technique. Early submissions are encouraged.
