LUX Center for the Arts
The AIR program is designed for artists who want to grow artistically and professionally while actively participating in community arts education. Residents help deliver LUX’s educational and outreach programming by teaching classes and workshops, assisting in gallery and community events, and contributing to exhibitions. The residency prioritizes community building, teaching skills, and public engagement alongside studio practice.
Artists working in physical (non-digital) media such as ceramics, painting, sculpture, fibers, metals, mixed media, drawing, etc. Demonstrated artistic practice and interest in teaching and community engagement Prior teaching experience preferred but not required International artists may apply only if they already hold a valid work-eligible visa (LUX cannot sponsor visas) Residents are expected to: Teach classes and workshops (typically 1–3 per week) for adults and youth Develop and propose new curricula based on their expertise Support community events, outreach, and gallery activities Participate in LUX’s educational programs, gallery installation, and outreach initiatives Attend regular planning and coordination meetings with staff What’s Provided: Studio & Facilities Private studio space with 24/7 access Use of equipment and materials in ceramics, metals, printmaking, fibers, and mixed media studios Financial Support: $400/month housing stipend $120/month materials stipend Paid hourly work opportunities (teaching, gallery/shop support, community events) at around $20/hour (higher for some outreach teaching) Residents are considered employees and receive hourly pay for teaching and other duties Exhibition & Professional Development Solo exhibition during the residency: Opportunities to curate shows and participate in group exhibitions Ability to sell work through LUX’s gallery and shop (artists receive a significant share of sales) Access to attend one professional conference annually with partial reimbursement
