Lakkos Artist Residency
The Lakkos Artist Residency has relocated to a new house within Heraklion city's old town, now closer to the city centre. The residency, artist-run and sustained by artists' contributions, aims to revitalise the historic Lakkos area by injecting life and art. Located in a beautiful old Modernist house, the program hosts three artists at a time. While public art and murals are encouraged, the residency welcomes a diverse range of creatives, including writers and those pursuing quieter forms of art. In addition to the Heraklion site, the residency acquired a second location in a Cretan village 30 minutes away in 2019. The residency has a history of hosting significant figures like Josephine Mead from Res Artis and has been the subject of various media, including interviews, a book by its founder Mathew, and short films showcasing its projects and the Lakkos area. The Heraklion city section provides extensive practical information about the city, including shop opening hours, locations for art materials, and nearby beaches. It also details the city's rich history, its Venetian and Ottoman influences, and notable landmarks such as the fortification walls, Koule fortress, Venetian Loggia, various fountains, and important churches. Key cultural institutions like the Archaeological Museum, Historical Museum, Museum of Natural History, and Cretaquarium are also highlighted.
