The Royal Photographic Society
The Joan Wakelin Bursary was established in 2005 in memory of distinguished documentary photographer and Honorary Fellow of The Society, Joan Wakelin. Administered by The Royal Photographic Society in partnership with The Guardian, this bursary offers £2000 for the production of a photographic essay on an overseas social documentary issue. The Bursary funds new projects only and does not support on-going projects. Additionally, it does not support projects requiring travel to or within war zones. The 2024 recipient, Myah Asha Jeffers, worked on 'EXCLUSION ZONE', a project focusing on the Caribbean island of Montserrat post-volcanic eruption, documenting its uninhabitable areas and the perspectives of its younger and older generations. On completion of the projects, each recipient will also have the opportunity to have a portfolio of images printed by Metro Imaging.
