About the Open Call

In Cahoots Residency offers a physical residency program for visual artists (printmakers, book artists, letterpress printers) and writers. The program is designed for individuals and collaborative teams (up to 5 members) with prior experience in their field. Applicants must be 18 years or older. With a strong focus on community and inclusion, the residency welcomes adult artists of all ethnicities, religions, ages, physical abilities, gender, financial status, and educational backgrounds. Residents are provided with individual housing and shared studio facilities. Supported (fully or partially funded) residencies are available each year for those with financial need, particularly emerging artists, recent students, people of color, and those returning to art or adjunct teachers. Accepted applicants for standard residencies are required to pay a holding deposit and the full residency fee, while supported residency recipients may have their costs covered. The property hosts three resident cats; strict dog policies are in place, and bringing spouses or dogs may incur additional fees and requires prior arrangement. All residents are asked to show a negative Covid test upon arrival.

What is Offered

The residency provides individual housing and shared studio space. Supported (fully or partially funded) residencies and various awards/fellowships are available based on merit and financial need. Mentorship and private instruction hours can be purchased separately. Residents receive support from In Cahoots staff for brief questions or equipment demonstrations.

Requirements

Applicants must have prior experience in art and/or writing, be 18 years or older, and submit a portfolio of 8-10 images of artwork (or 1-3 writing samples). A negative COVID test is required upon arrival. Collaborative teams are encouraged. Artists with allergies should note there are three resident cats on the property. Bringing spouses or dogs may incur additional fees and requires prior arrangement, with strict dog policies in place.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted twice a year: for residencies taking place from January to May of 2026 (deadline June 1, 2025, application period April 23 - June 2, 2025) and for residencies taking place from June to December of 2026 (deadline October 1, 2025, application period August 18 - October 1, 2025). A $25 application fee is required, payable upon completion of the application form through CaFÉ. Applicants must submit contact information, an introduction, a description of their creative process, a project proposal, specific equipment needs, a CV, and 8-10 images of artwork (or 1-3 writing samples). Collaborative teams must each complete a separate entry form, noting their team status. For Supported Residencies, applicants must additionally describe their financial need and artistic merit, and provide contact information for three references.
