Earplay: 2026 Donald Aird Composers Competition

About the Open Call

Earplay sponsors the annual Earplay Donald Aird Composers Competition, honoring the late composer/conductor Donald Aird. The competition is open to composers of any nationality and age. Works are limited to 1 to 6 players from Earplay's specific ensemble instrumentation: flute/piccolo/alto flute/bass flute; clarinet/bass clarinet; piano; violin; viola; and cello. Works may include electronics and may be of any duration, though 8-15 minutes is preferred. Scores must be submitted anonymously, and both online and mail applications are accepted.

What is Offered

$1,500 cash prize and a performance by Earplay during the 2027 season.

Requirements

Open to composers of any nationality and any age. Compositions must be for 1 to 6 players from the defined ensemble instrumentation. Scores must have all composer identification removed for anonymity during the jury review.

How to Apply

Submit a completed online application (strongly encouraged) or apply via mail. Applicants must provide an anonymous score, a brief composer biography, and the application fee of $30 USD per score. Audio recordings and program notes are recommended but not required.
