The Documentary Lab is Firelight Media’s 12-month fellowship designed to nurture filmmakers of color directing their first or second feature-length non-fiction film. In 2026, the lab exclusively accepts projects currently in post-production, providing a $25,000 project grant, customized mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities.

Applicants must be emerging documentary filmmakers of color based in the United States or U.S. territories directing their first or second feature-length documentary. Projects must be in post-production. The program is not for student films, series, or fiction projects. Directors must hold the majority of the intellectual property.
Applications are submitted via the Submittable portal. Applicants should prepare by writing their responses in a backup document before copying them into the online form. Detailed guidelines and the submission link are available on the official website.
