Creative Body Institute
We invite artists of all disciplines to apply for DEEP TIME, an immersive experience at the intersection of art and ecology, held on the remote island of Fleinvær in Arctic Norway. DEEP TIME unfolds in a landscape of elemental presence — no cars, no shops, no artificial noise, no visual clutter. Just sea, rock, sky, and shifting light. Here, time stretches. Sensory attention sharpens. Artistic process deepens. This interdisciplinary immersive opportunity is for visual artists, writers, composers, photographers, performance and body artists, choreographers, dancers, movement practitioners, filmmakers, sound artists, and artistic-researchers whose work engages environment, temporality, and place — whether through material, concept, ritual, or imagination. We welcome those working in any form or medium who are drawn to explore the layered entanglements of time and ecology. Themes include (but are not limited to): Deep time and geologic rhythms, Climate, impermanence, and change, Ecological systems and nonhuman temporalities, Site-specificity and sensory practice, Landscape, soundscape, and the politics of attention, Sustainability as lived, creative practice, Duration, slowness, and expanded perception. The November sessions invite slowness and immersion. The long nights and aurora-lit skies offer a rare container for quiet work, collaborative exchange, and deep focus. The immersive art and ecology experience includes sleeping cabins, shared creative spaces, and time to work independently or in dialogue.
2-weeks Accommodation in private or shared sleeping cabin, all food for meals, artist work spaces, access to common areas (kitchen house, studio house, Njalla, performance deck, bath house), immersion in nature, wood-fired sauna, mentoring and development of your work (individual and group), group programming and exchange, structured critique and reflection sessions with your peers, and documentation of your work (photo & video).
Artists of all disciplines, including visual artists, writers, composers, photographers, performance and body artists, choreographers, dancers, movement practitioners, filmmakers, sound artists, and artistic-researchers whose work engages environment, temporality, and place. Applicants should be drawn to explore the layered entanglements of time and ecology. Participants should be aware the island has no roads, cars, or shops, and those with mobility impairments may find the terrain and lack of infrastructure difficult to navigate. The Triple Sleeping Cabin specifically requires ability to ascend a vertical climbing ladder regularly.
To apply, please review the process, timeline, and costs and fill in the online application form. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; early submission is encouraged. Upon acceptance, a $350 program deposit is due to confirm participation, with full payment required on or before October 1. The online application form requests personal details, session and cabin selection, a recent work or work in progress URL, a brief artist bio or statement, and responses to questions about group interaction, immersion in nature, and previous participation.
