About the Open Call

The program offers a supportive environment for artistic risk-taking, cross-disciplinary experimentation, and deeper integration between concept and production design. Participants will strengthen choreographic voice, develop practical skills with lighting, sound, and stagecraft, gain insight into dramaturgical tools, learn best practices for communicating with and leading creative and technical teams, and test production elements for touring or premiere. The residency concludes with a public showing at either the Margaret Greenham or Jenny Belzberg Theatre.

What is Offered

Includes a credit-based meal plan ($68/day), single bedroom accommodation on Banff Centre campus, specialized studio space, opportunities to showcase work-in-progress, access to the Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives, and campus facilities (Participant Resources, Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation Centre, Box Office Discounts). Scholarships are available, covering 100% of tuition and at least 50% of accommodation/meal plan costs (100% for Canadian Indigenous applicants).

Requirements

This program is open to: projects at any stage of production, early-career dance artists, choreographers, or collectives of 6 to 14 members, artists wishing to integrate production elements early, and those interested in cross-disciplinary collaboration. All participants must be 18+ and attend for the full program duration. Domestic and international applications are welcome, but participants must obtain a Visitor Visa if required for Canada. Applicants are encouraged to apply if they identify with historically underrepresented and equity-deserving groups.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete an online form (Step 1), pay the application fee (Step 2), and upload required materials through SlideRoom (Step 3). Required materials include: a two-page resume/C.V. (all group resumes in one document), a one-page cover letter, a two-page project proposal (including technical requests), a resource request form, a video portfolio (up to 10 minutes), a completed Dance Participant Budget Planning Tool, and names/contact details of up to three proposed faculty members. Group applications: lead applicant completes Step 1, pays the $65 fee (Indigenous applicants pay $35), and submits one SlideRoom application for the group. An additional $35 registration fee per group member is added upon acceptance.
