CUNY Dance Initiative
The CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI) invites New York City choreographers and dance companies to apply for residencies that provide rehearsal and performance space on 13 CUNY campuses across the five boroughs, plus 4 partner organizations. Independent choreographers and professional companies working in a variety of dance styles, from contemporary to classical and culturally specific forms, are encouraged to apply. Residencies take place during a 12-month cycle from July 1 – June 30. Each CDI residency varies, depending on the needs of the selected choreographer/company and the available facilities, ranging from rehearsal-only to culminating in a public performance, and may include master classes or guest lectures. The residency can support the creation of new work or the rehearsal of existing repertory. Residencies at Manhattan colleges are typically more competitive, with over half awarded for creative development/rehearsal only.
Each selected choreographer/company will receive a minimum of 25 hours of rehearsal space, a minimum of $1,000 residency honorarium, and an opportunity to teach 1-2 master classes/guest lectures, or hold an open rehearsal. A minimum performance fee of $3,000, along with marketing and technical support, is provided if the residency culminates in a public performance. Artists may also be considered for out-of-town residencies through partnerships with Works & Process and The Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
Applicants must reside or be incorporated in the five boroughs of New York City and have been working and performing professionally for at least three years (excluding work created during high school or college). Applicants must be legal U.S. citizens or residents. Full-time faculty/staff/students at CUNY colleges, dance schools, or educational organizations are not eligible. Applicants who have received a CDI residency for the past two consecutive years are also ineligible.
Applications for the CUNY Dance Initiative residencies will be accepted during an open call from December 9, 2025, to January 20, 2026. Applicants should apply through the online application portal linked from the CUNY Dance Initiative website. It is recommended to review the FAQ and Participating Colleges sections for detailed information before applying.
