Kolaj Institute
Collage in Motion is a project of Kolaj Institute that explores collage and the moving image, a broad, loosely defined category that includes animations, film cut-ups, collage film, stop-motion, animated GIFs, documentaries about collage artists, and other forms of media in which collage–as medium or genre–is present. The Collage on Screen Artist Residency is a five-week program designed to support artists who want to develop a practice that includes motion in their artmaking. In five virtual meetings over five weeks and through ongoing, online discussion, participants will explore the history of collage on screen and various ways collage makes its way to the screen. The residency asks: How do we, as collage artists, make artwork that speaks to the immersive and temporal nature of collage on screen? Designed for collage artists, professional development sessions focus on artist practice, how to develop a story, and how to develop moving images and sound to tell that story. Residents will make a 30-second film that will be considered for Collage on Screen at Kolaj Fest New Orleans, 10-14 June 2026, and, if selected, included in Kolaj Institute’s traveling screening program.
This residency provides support for artists to develop a practice in collage and motion art, offering professional development sessions on artist practice, storytelling, and moving images/sound. Residents will produce a 30-second film considered for screening at Kolaj Fest New Orleans 2026 and inclusion in Kolaj Institute’s traveling screening program. Artists will gain new skills, tools, and understanding of effective art-making in this medium.
This residency seeks a diverse group of artists passionate about exploring the intersections of collage and film. All skill levels are welcome; however, those new to the medium should be prepared to develop necessary technical skills (video editing, sound editing, digital image editing). Artists are expected to attend all scheduled sessions and complete assignments. By participating, artists grant Kolaj Institute, Kolaj Magazine, and Maison Kasini permission to screen their short film publicly and publish still images for project promotion.
Submit your application HERE via the provided Submittable link. The submission process asks applicants for: Contact information, Artist Bio (50-250 words), Statement of Artist Practice (50-300 words), and 5-7 examples of artwork (still or moving images or links to other films).
