About the Open Call

This commission invites artists to design and produce a mural for a prominent wall in Union Square. The project emphasises community engagement, place-making, and public visibility, encouraging artists to respond to the neighbourhood’s history, diversity, and ongoing transformation. The selected artist will work with stakeholders and potentially incorporate community input into the final design.

Requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate experience in mural-making or large-scale public art. The application typically requires a portfolio of past work, a statement of interest, and possibly an initial concept or approach to the site. Artists should be able to manage the full production process, including design development and execution, and may need to collaborate with community partners as part of the project.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted online through the Somerville Arts Council’s process. Artists must provide portfolio materials, background information, and project-related statements. A selection panel reviews submissions and shortlists artists for the commission.
