About the Open Call

Sculpture Walk Springfield, in partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Springfield, invites artists to submit proposals for a permanent sculpture to be installed at Birthplace Plaza, a historically significant site marking the origin of Route 66 in downtown Springfield, Missouri. The chosen artwork will signify the cultural importance of Route 66, enhance the plaza’s long-term identity, and provide striking visuals both during the day and at night. This request is distinct from the Impact Piece RFP and concentrates exclusively on independent sculptural work. Birthplace Plaza is located at the southwest corner of Jefferson Avenue and St. Louis Street — the original site of the Colonial Hotel. This highly visible site will serve as a long-term destination for Route 66 travelers and downtown visitors alike. Project Goals: Celebrate the spirit of Route 66, Establish a distinctive sculptural presence at the plaza, Prioritize durability and low maintenance, Enhance the space visually during the day and at night. A budget of $25,000 (all-inclusive) is provided to cover all costs related to artist fees, design and fabrication, transportation and delivery, on-site installation, lighting or structural components, and required insurance and permitting. No additional funds will be provided for infrastructure changes or site preparation.

What is Offered

A commission fee of $25,000 (all-inclusive) is provided to cover artist fees, design, fabrication, transportation, delivery, on-site installation, lighting, structural components, insurance, and permitting for the permanent sculpture.

Requirements

Eligibility: Open to artists, artist teams, and fabricators based in the U.S. Demonstrated experience in creating durable, large-scale public works is preferred. Artists with experience incorporating lighting or technology are encouraged to apply. Selection Criteria: Artistic Merit & Vision, Visual Impact, Durability & Safety, Feasibility, Community Fit.
