Artists in Residencies

About the Open Call

ArteSumapaz offers ongoing Artists in Residencies (AIRs) with durations from four weeks to longer. The program provides space in a hundred-year-old hacienda for artists to live and work. Artists-in-residents are invited to contribute to an alternative school through workshops, classes, “open crit” sessions, or one-on-one discussions. Disciplines and media supported include Visual Art, Printmaking, Architecture, Sculpture, Ceramics, Dance, Theatre, Performing Arts, Textile Art, Music, Literature, and Painting and drawing. Selection is by Committee, and presentation of artists’ work is arranged on a case-by-case basis. The working languages are English and Spanish, and other activities like workshops and concerts also happen at the space. The residency allows companions, including children and partners.

What is Offered

The organization provides spacious studio and living space, vegetarian meals, housing, internet connection, a dance/performance practice space, musical instruments (particularly percussion), a library, and a kitchen.

Requirements

Artists are expected to participate in “open crit” sessions during school sessions, help out with post-meal cleanup, and maintain their own room and studio space. Artists are responsible for travel expenses, residency fees (ranging from $245 to $1,270 per month depending on room and volunteer status), and supplies.
