The Watermill Center
The Watermill Center’s Artist Residency Program, established in 2006, hosts collectives and individuals annually to develop works that critically investigate, challenge, and extend existing artistic norms. It is a process-based program, emphasizing experimentation in a communal environment without the expectation of a final exhibition. Artists-in-Residence gain access to 20,000 square feet of rehearsal/design spaces, outdoor stages, a theater production archive, the Study Center and Library of Inspiration, The Watermill Collection, and ten acres of landscaped grounds. Applications are reviewed by an international committee of Watermill Center alumni, comprising artists, academics, and cultural leaders across various disciplines. The program is open to national and international artists 21+ years of age across visual arts, media/new genre, performance, architecture, film/video, literature, interdisciplinary arts, and music composition. Solo artists and collaborative groups are welcome. Selection criteria include artistic merit of the proposed project and past work, project feasibility at Watermill, and how the artist will benefit from the residency. The Watermill Center is committed to providing accessible programs and services for all patrons and artists with disabilities.
The Watermill Center provides artists with time, space, and freedom to develop their practice, access to 20,000 sq ft rehearsal/design spaces, outdoor stages, a theater production archive, Study Center, Library of Inspiration, The Watermill Collection, and ten-acre grounds. Residents receive local transportation, housing, workspace, and a modest stipend to offset living expenses. Letters of support for outside funding are available upon request.
Residents are required to participate in 'In Process @ The Watermill Center,' involving open rehearsals, workshops, studio visits, lectures, or artist talks. Workshops and other community events are strongly encouraged. Applicants should note any special housing needs. A valid driver's license is highly recommended for local travel. Pets are not allowed. Smoking is allowed outdoors only. Artists are responsible for their own workspace care.
Applications are accepted through the online portal, SlideRoom, at https://watermillcenter.slideroom.com. SlideRoom will guide applicants through required questions, attachments, and media uploads. There is a $12 USD fee per application required by SlideRoom, payable on their website.
