Newberry Library
The Newberry Library offers several Artist-in-Residence Fellowships, including the Jan and Frank Cicero Fellowship, the Arthur and Lila Weinberg Fellowship for Independent Researchers, and the Historical Fiction Writing Fellowship. These residencies support artists and performers including painters, sculptors, choreographers, dramaturgs, composers, and filmmakers who wish to use the library's vast collection to further their creative work. The Weinberg fellowship specifically favors projects focused on social justice or reform and is intended for those outside traditional academic settings.
$3,000 stipend and one month of support for collection-based research.
Applicants must demonstrate how the use of the Newberry collection will advance their artistic project. The Weinberg Fellowship is specifically for individuals working outside of traditional academic settings. Historical Fiction applicants must be working on novels, short stories, plays, or poetry with a historical focus.
Applicants should apply online through the Newberry Library website's fellowship application portal at https://www.newberry.org/research/artists-in-residence/how-to-apply.
