Science Museum of Minnesota
Nestled along the St. Croix River, the Artist at Pine Needles Residency is a rare space where creative practice and scientific inquiry sit side-by-side. Offering time, solitude, and direct access to scientists, this residency allows artists to explore how art and natural sciences influence one another. For the 2026 cycle, the program is open exclusively to emerging artists and writers who are in the beginning stages of their creative practice. Residents engage with Science Museum of Minnesota scientists, explore the J.W.G. Dunn Natural History Library, participate in field and lab experiences, and gather source materials to create work that illuminates the intersection of art and scientific research.
$650/week stipend, up to $600 in additional travel support, and lodging at the Pine Needles cabin.
Open to emerging artists and writers (fewer than six years of exhibit/publication history) aged 21 or older whose work connects art and science. Selected artists must donate one original work developed during the residency within one year.
Interested artists must submit a completed application packet containing an application form, artist statement, program statement, community engagement proposal, and example works. Applications can be postmarked or sent electronically to researchstation@smm.org by the deadline.
