About the Open Call

The Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award was created to honor the life and work of Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer and IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner Anja Niedringhaus (1965-2014). The IWMF celebrates the courageous work of women photojournalists who inspire us to take action and better understand the world. Recipients of the award receive a cash prize and have their work showcased during an award ceremony. The award is open to full-time journalists of any nationality.

What is Offered

One winner will receive a $20,000 cash prize and have their work showcased during an award ceremony.

Requirements

Open to women, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming journalists who are working as full-time journalists as their primary profession. Submissions must include 12 photographs, 6 of which must have been taken within the past two years (2024-2026). Submissions must be in English and cannot include videos, art photography, or illustrations.

How to Apply

Sign up for a free Picter account to submit. Each application must include candidate information, work samples consisting of 12 photographs (minimum 1500px, 72 dpi, JPG format), and a candidate/nomination statement of up to 500 words in English answering four specific questions regarding the journalist's work conditions and storytelling.
