2025 Self-Guided Residencies

About the Open Call

The Art Colony has two application periods for self-guided residencies. This application is for artists who are looking to schedule a residency from July - December, 2025. That said, there are still some available weeks in the January - June window so give us a call if you'd prefer to apply for those months: 218-387-2737. Self-guided residencies are fee-based residencies. Artists can work with outside grant sources to fund their time at the Art Colony. The Art Colony also has scholarships available through the Belvo/Jorgenson Scholarship Fund. Email for more details: info@grandmaraisartcolony.org. Residency Timeline: January 16, 2025 | Applications Open, October 16, 2025 | Applications Close, Rolling | Notifications, July - December 2025 | Residency Period. Residencies are subject to a 25% non-refundable deposit and cleaning fees. Full payment is due 45 days prior. One week is equivalent to 5 - 7 days. Should you be applying with a group, please use the group residency form instead of this one. All of our studios are within walking distance of Lake Superior, the downtown business district, guest suite, and YMCA. Studios are accessible from ground level or by ramp and residents have 24 hour access plus WiFi. Studio Cleaning Fees: $50 cleaning fee for 1 - 2 week and $100 for 3 - 4 weeks. Guest Suite: 3 separate, lockable rooms, Shared kitchen, living area, bath/shower. All bedding and linens are provided and laundered between each visit. The space is thoroughly cleaned, laundered and sanitized between stays. Guest suite is up a flight of stairs on a second floor level. There is also an ADA compliant guest room in Studio 21. Guest Suite fees: $50/night plus one time $50 cleaning fee for 1 - 2 week stays, $100 cleaning fee for 3 - 4 week stays. Residencies run from the first of each month for 1 - 4 weeks in length, begin on Mondays and end on Fridays. Please do not enter a start date other than a Monday, following this format. All 4-week residencies will start on the first Monday of the month. Available Studios and Weekly Fees (5-7 days): Ceramics Studio (1000 sq ft, cooperative, with equipment): 1 week @ $195, 2 weeks @ $370, 3 weeks at $545, 4 weeks @ $730. Founders Hall Studio (2000 sq ft, northern light, high ceilings, wood floors, easels, etc.): 1 week @ $290, 2 weeks @ $565, 3 weeks @ $840, 4 weeks @ $1,115. Pill Box Studio (500 sq ft, downtown, easels, etc.): 1 week @ $195, 2 weeks @ $370, 3 weeks at $545, 4 weeks @ $730. Printmaking Studio (750 sq ft, with presses and facilities): 1 week @ $195, 2 weeks @ $370, 3 weeks at $545, 4 weeks @ $730. The Writing Room (in Studio 21 Building): $125 / 1 week, $225 / 2 weeks, $300 / 3 weeks, $400 / 4 weeks. Studio 21 Add-on (adjacent to Pill Box Studio): $110 / 1 week, $210 / 2 weeks, $310 / 3 weeks, $410 / 4 weeks.

Requirements

Applicants should note that residencies are fee-based. Groups must use a separate application form. Residencies run 1-4 weeks, starting on the first Monday of each month and ending on Fridays; 4-week residencies begin on the first Monday of the month.
